Kaafu Atoll (K.) is located between latitude 4° 59' N and 3° 48' N. Situated to the south of Lhaviyani Atoll. Kaafu Atoll has 4 natural atolls.
At the very north is Kaashidhoo, a relatively large agricultural island with a population of about 1800. Just south of Kaashidhoo is Gaafaru Atoll with with Gaafaru (pop. 1100) as the only island with numerous shipwrecks on the northern side of the reef.
Just south of Gaafaru Atoll is North Male' Atoll. Apart from Male', the capital (pop. over 75000), there are 4 inhabited islands including Thulusdhoo, the capital of Kaaf Atoll. Male' International Airport is located on the south eastern side, mainly on reclaimed land and is about a kilometer from the capital. Tourism initially started on the island of Kurumba Village in this atoll in 1972 and expanded to nearby uninhabited islands, then to the South Male' Atoll and later on to other atolls of Maldives. Today there are more than 25 resorts in North Male' Atoll.
South Male' Atoll too has a number to tourist resorts because of the close proximity to the airport. There are 3 imhabited islands and over 15 resorts in this atoll.
