Seenu Atoll (S.) is located between latitude 0° 36' S and 0° 44' S south of the equator. Addu Atoll is the second populous city apart from Male'. The atoll capital is Hithadhoo with a population of about 15000. There are six administrative islands in Addu Atoll. Hithadhoo has a secondary school, a regional hospital, good telecommunication facilities, an asphalt road connecting from Gan-Hithadhoo (the first of it's kind in Maldives), fish processing, and garment factories and a regional port to cater for ocean going vessels. A domestic airport on Gan is seved by daily flights from Male'. The British had established their presence in Addu Atoll since the second world war and developed the island of Gan as a Royal Air Force base as a strategic Cold War outpost in 1956. Causeways were built connecting the islands of Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo and employed local men until the time they pulled out in 1976. Most of the employees who had experience working for westerners and who spoke good english had turned to the tourism industry for employment. As a result, there was an influx of Addu people to Male' seeking employment in the nearby resorts and also looking for education to their children. The runway strip on Gan island is now being upgraded to and international airport to cater for the growing tourism industry in the south of Maldives. Gan island has a hotel catering for tourists. The nearby island of Viligili is being developed as a tourist resort and expected to open soon.
